: MORE GREETINGS to all and the newcomers to this list. We'd like to introduce ourselves. George and Rita Williams founded this ministry. We were Mormons (Temple Mormons) for 20 years. We prayed to God in 1992 to allow us to do a ministry speaking out against Scientology. Six months later God led us to the truth: out of the cult of Mormonism. We did not know at the time we were in a cult. No-one had witnessed to us in 20 years. [George passed away to heaven in March 2003 and Nicholas Stivers joined the ministry as Vice President.]
The Holy Spirit brought us to information about all the cults and the present development of the New World Order. We began bringing our research to you. Because all the research was already done, we decided to build a library within Cephas Ministry. Our newsletters are not designed to provoke anger or resistance to evil which is strictly prohibited in Scripture. It is to shed light on activities by those who would deceive the elect by devious methods and systematic plans.
We appreciate and thank researchers for submitting findings relative to our library:

We are Bible students and have left all worldly organizations.
The focus of these newsletters is to prove why we had to leave the world system. We are called 'Watchmen on the Wall' which God always had during the Old / New Testament Times.
To understand what is happening, one has to know the Bible to compare notes.
The first section is about the church. The news about churches is unedited unless indicated by Ednotes. The church as we knew it, is undergoing disintegration. This began on a fast track in the early nineteen sixties when the Catholic Church produced liberal Vatican II to replace Vatican I.
The trend since then has been ecumenical which is truly what the word 'Catholicism' means: a universal religion all inclusive and multicultural. The Bible calls for a final church which doesn't resemble what Jesus taught. The Word of God has undergone many changes to fit the present mode. The Bible calls for a falling away from the truth before Jesus comes back for His Bride, the true believers are called 'Ekklesia.' Our newsletters prove this fact and prove that the Bible is true from beginning to end.
The second section is about globalism where we bring your attention to the social, political and global trend, so called democratizing what is left. One third of the world still remains to be taken over. It again proves that we are moving to closure of the times of the Gentiles prophesied in the Bible.
The third section compliments End Time teachings with what is happening in Israel. We describe and watch for signs of the coming Tribulation to confirm that we are moving into that space of time.
Watchmen on the wall do not solicit memberships. We have an email group that gets information when we upload new information and a newsletter whenever it is possible time wise. We love the Lord with all our hearts and minds and we love all people God has created but especially those who love our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And you have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq ! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible The names used in the Bible are Babylon , Land of Shinar , and Mesopotamia . The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers . The name Iraq , means country with deep roots.
Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible.
No other nation, except Israel , has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq .
And also, This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages...

Plan. And incidentally, both Collins and Blanchard have spoken with Mikhail Gorbachev and former President Bill Clinton in international leadership conferences. Their influence world-wide is tremendous. How is it that the two most influential evangelical pastors have each linked up with someone who is a promoter of Eastern style meditation and the New Age? GARBC VOTES BY SLIM MAJORITY TO DISASSOCIATE FROM CEDARVILLE
Friday Church News Notes, September 8, 2006 - Earlier this year the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC) voted by a slim majority to sever its ties with Cedarville University in Ohio because of the school's new affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention. The messengers who met at the 2006 annual conference passed the proposal by a vote of 311 to 283. Before the conference the Association's Council of Eighteen called for the separation because "Southern Baptists are inclusivists and permit the presence and ministry of liberals within the convention" ("Two Degrees of Separation," Christianity Today, Aug. 29, 2006). John Greening, GARBC national representative, said that though the SBC has taken some commendable steps in recent years, no evangelical has done more "to blur the distinction between evangelicals and Catholics than Billy Graham," whom the SBC recently honored with a statue in North Carolina. The sad part about this is the slim majority by which the decision was made. A large number of GARBC delegates voted against the separation, raising the smokescreen of "second degree separation, " whereas at an earlier time in its history such a decision would have been clear-cut. The GARBC once stood unequivocally against New Evangelical compromise and inclusivism, but that is no longer the case. As a young Christian I was helped on the issue of separation by some of the GARBC literature. One of their old pamphlets was titled "A Limited Message or a Limited Fellowship," and it warned of exactly the type of compromise that Billy Graham and the Southern Baptist Convention epitomizes. To separate from disobedient brethren is not "second degree separation"; it is obedience to God's Word. "Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us" (2 Thess. 3:6). SBC PASTOR AND SEMINARY TRUSTEE SPEAKS IN TONGUES
Friday Church News Notes, September 8, 2006 - Speaking at a chapel service on August 29, Dwight McKissic, a trustee of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, told the students that he speaks in tongues in his "private prayer life" ("Southwestern Trustee's Sermon on Tongues Prompts Response," Baptist Press, Aug. 30). McKissic, who is also the pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, an SBC congregation in Arlington, Texas, said he has prayed in tongues since 1981. In response to the message the seminary issued a statement saying that most people at Southwestern would be not advocate McKissic's position on tongues but also saying that it was "honored" to have him as a trustee and chapel speaker. It is obvious that Charismatic doctrine and practice continue to make headway in the SBC. Though the SBC Foreign Mission Board passed a ruling last November forbidding missionaries to speak in a "private prayer language," the head of the Board, Jerry Rankin, admits he has spoken in such a "language" for 30 years. Missionary David Rogers, son of the late Adrian Rogers, SAID HE WORKS WITH MANY MISSIONARIES WHO PRACTICE PRIVATE TONGUES.
Thus, it appears that this is not a small issue or one that will go away any time soon. Rankin and those supporting his position are trying to distinguish between public tongues and private, saying that while they are opposed to public tongues they believe there is a private form of tongues that an individual can use to edify himself. In fact, biblical tongues are biblical tongues. The tongues of Acts are the tongues of 1 Corinthians 14. They were real languages that a believer could speak supernaturally. They were a sign to the nation Israel that God was going to send the gospel to every nation and create a new spiritual body composed of both Jews and Gentiles (1 Cor. 14:20-22, quoting Isaiah 28:11-13). Each time tongues were spoken in Acts (Acts 2, 10, 19) Jews were present. As the prophet Isaiah foretold, the Jews rejected the sign and were judged. The last mention of tongues is in Acts 19. The sign, having been fulfilled, ceased. When John Chrysostom wrote in the 4th century about the sign gifts of 1 Corinthians 12-14, he said: "This whole place is very obscure: but the obscurity is produced by our ignorance of the facts referred to, and BY THEIR CESSATION, being such as then used to occur but now no longer take place" ("Homilies on 1 Corinthians," Vol. XII, The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Hom. 29:2). There is no "private prayer language" in the New Testament. It is the recent invention of Pentecostals and Charismatics who, having realized that they cannot speak in real tongues that can be interpreted (one of the biblical requirements), were forced either to renounce their experience or to create some sort of cockeyed defense for it. There is not one example of a prayer in the Bible that is uttered in unintelligible mutterings that "bypass the intellect." Jesus Christ did not pray that way and neither did the apostles. The Charismatic doctrine of a private prayer language is neither innocent nor lacking in spiritual danger. The Bible warns repeatedly and forcefully about the danger of spiritual deception, and those who empty their minds are in danger of the devil filling them. http://www.wayoflife.org

CALIFORNIA PASSES LAW FORBIDDING SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES TO TEACH MORAL CODES Friday Church News Notes, September 8, 2006 - California governor (R.) Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill on August 28 which requires all businesses and groups receiving state funding (even state disability insurance, unemployment insurance, workers' compensation, veterans services, or a state grant for an individual student) to condone homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality ("Bill Forces Condoning of Homosexuality," WorldNetDaily, Aug. 29, 2006). There is no exemption for religious conviction. The bill requires all institutions that receive state aid "to support alternative sexual lifestyle choices." This means they will not be allowed to speak out against such immoral acts. Sodom would have approved, but we know the end of Sodom, both ancient and modern. http://www.wayoflife.org

APOSTLES AND PROPHETS TODAY
Friday Church News Notes, September 8, 2006 - The Lord's apostles had miraculous sign gifts to authenticate their ministries (2 Cor. 12:12) and they had seen the resurrected Christ (1 Cor. 9:1; 15-5-9). There are only 12 apostles for all eternity. In the New Jerusalem the names of the 12 apostles are inscribed in the city's 12 foundations. Their work was to lay the foundation of the church (Eph. 2:20), and when that foundation work was accomplished they died and went to glory and the apostolic office ceased to function. Since then, those who have claimed to be apostles in the sense of Christ's apostles have been deceived. The popes claim to sit in Peter's "seat." Joseph Smith claimed to be an apostle. John Dowie and Frank Sandford and other cultists of the 19th century claimed that God was restoring the apostolic office, and today there are many Charismatics or "Third Wave" evangelicals who believe the same thing. C. Peter Wagner is one of these. Formerly a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, Wagner was influenced by the error of the late John Wimber of the Vineyard Churches, and others, and has gone off into all sorts of unscriptural charismatic-style things such as accepting female preachers, miracle evangelism, "spiritual mapping," and binding territorial spirits. Wagner claims that the Holy Spirit led he and his associates to restore the office of apostles and prophets in the 1990s. He is part of the "New Apostolic Reformation" and is the "Presiding Apostle" of the "International Coalition of Apostles." He claims God has assigned them to "communicate to the body of Christ some of the new things that the Spirit is saying to the churches." In fact, he is deeply deceived. NEW HEAD OF THE WCC SAYS ECUMENISM EXTENDS TO WHOLE CREATED UNIVERSE
Friday Church News Notes, September 8, 2006 - The new moderator of the World Council of Churches, Walter Altmann, believes that the divisions among denominations is a "scandal' and has the objective of unifying them, but he also says that the goal of ecumenism goes beyond the unification of churches. In an interview with the Christian Post, Altmann said ecumenism "extends far beyond the frontiers of the churches and embraces the whole of humankind and the whole created universe" ("Greater Communion Not Minimalist Agenda," Christian Post, Aug. 28, 2006). This is an expression of gross heresy. The Lord's Great Commission is to preach the gospel to all men and to establish churches to baptize and disciple those who believe (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:44-48; Acts 1:8). That is the pattern we see in the book of Acts. There is no commandment in the New Testament for churches of all doctrinal beliefs to join together in any sort of union. To the contrary, those that hold to apostolic doctrine are required to separate from those that do not (Romans 16:17). Further, the Bible says the created universe is under the curse of sin and will only be set right at the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. There will be no peace or justice until Christ returns. As for the "whole of humankind," it is under the condemnation of sin and every individual that dies without Jesus Christ will spend eternity in the lake of fire. Thus, the urgent task of the churches of Jesus Christ is to rescue men from the judgment to come by preaching the Gospel and urging them to be saved. The World Council of Churches has replaced Christ's Great Commission with a humanistic program of social work and political endeavor; the objective of saving souls has been replaced with that of saving the creation. http://www.wayoflife.org

BEWARE OF "CHRISTIAN" PSYCHOLOGY
Friday Church News Notes, September 8, 2006 - The following is excerpted from "Psychology and the Evangelical Church" by T.A. McMahon, The Berean Call, March 2006: "Psychotherapy has sold the church the lie that psychology can be integrated with the Bible. That ought to be scandalous to any thoughtful believer. Since psychology and the Bible are fundamentally in opposition to one another, it should be obvious that there can be no real integration of their teachings. Moreover, if the Bible, the Manufacturer's handbook, isn't sufficient to cover all things that pertain to life and godliness, then His created beings must look elsewhere for their mental, emotional, and behavioral welfare. And if they must look elsewhere, then the Bible's claim to be authoritative, inerrant, and sufficient is also false. How influential is psychotherapy in the church? It would be rare indeed to find a topical sermon with no supposed insights from psychology. Typical would be Willow Creek church near Chicago, whose influence is national and international through its 10,000-member association of churches. One researcher of church-growth methods who spent a year at Willow Creek observed, '[Bill] Hybels not only teaches psychological principles but often uses the psychological principles as interpretive guides for his exegesis of Scripture. ... King David had an identity crisis, the apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to do self-analysis, and Peter had a problem with boundary issues. The point is, psychological principles are regularly built into Hybels' teaching.' Rick Warren's record- breaking The Purpose-Driven Life furthers the acceptance of psychology in the church by including such psychobabble as 'Samson was co-dependent' and 'Gideon's weakness was low self-esteem and deep insecurities.'" http://www.wayoflife.org

THE POPE AND ISLAM
Christian greeting’s everyone in these last days of Earth’s history. Are you concerned with the growing number of politicians and governing officials, as well as church leaders that are getting a bit too chummy with the nation of Islam. Is it becoming more and more obvious that the desires of the Muslim are being preferred by the powers that be no matter what faith they claim to embrace.
A couple or so years back I noticed something a bit strange going on in this area. In fact, it was so strange that I decided to keep track as best I could. I wasn’t looking by the way for any confirmation, or documented info on it at this time. Only an inkling as to what I perceived. I just wanted to see if my discernment was accurate on this. After a year or so of watching the news, especially in areas regarding the Pope, and Islam, I noticed in my last count that John Paul II had eleven meetings with Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat regarding Middle eastern peace, and NONE with the Jewish leader Ariel Sharon during their ongoing unrest. It was then I decided to start keeping track of any and all articles that connected the two together. All the while I am researching this, the thought kept crossing my mind that Roman Catholicism sports 1.2 billion people that claim the Pope their leader, and Islam has just as many claiming Arafat theirs. One would think a joining of the minds here would be VERY advantages in the Pope’s global aspirations, as well as his boss Antichrist. Especially if he starts to show desires of the land we call Jerusalem as Daniel 11:45 says he most assuredly will.
This also became more plausible in my mind after researching how the Islamic faith came to be, and Rome’s obvious involvement in it. History show that the Vatican arranged the marriage of Mohammed and his wife who was a catholic, and the Catholic bishops help Mohammed write the Koran and gain his power. This was done by Papal Rome all in an effort to cause the Muslims to hate the Jews, as well as all Christians who were not catholic. Two birds with one stone if you will. Get rid of the Christians so that Rome could stand as the supreme moral authority, and rid the Jews of their land so that Rome can set her temples upon the holy land in triumph. Of course history proves it backfired for the Pope, which in turn caused him to growl across Europe in the crusades that saw countless deaths for centuries. However lately, it seems Jerusalem is finally within the grasp of Rome once again!
At present I have 62 articles dating back to May 5, 2001 that cover a bevy of Vatican middle eastern movements and theological acceptance regarding it’s global desires and merging with the Islamic state. Also keep in mind I have not put all ministerial duties on hold and immersed myself in researching this project. I just happened across most of these facts just as easy as anyone else could have done. I wanted it to be that way so that I can see just how subtle this movement was going to creep upon us all. USING CHRIST TO WIN ELECTIONS
Christian greetings everyone in these last days of life on earth. The picture you are looking at says quite a lot doesn’t it? Can you see prophecy being fulfilled just by looking at it. The United States of America appears to have started out as a Christian nation seeking freedom from Roman Catholic murderous persecution. Even the buildings in our nations capital try to portray that fact. Though they are Roman in architecture, and they do in fact have some demonic depictions on them, some of them do in fact display our Christian forefathers desires. This nation was mostly a Christian nation in its beginning. Sure, the enemy of Christians is always there waiting to pounce, but all in all, most of what came to be in this nations inception was because of men that prayed unto and trusted the Christian God.
As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S. Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing someone in the middle, who is facing forward with a full frontal view. It's Moses, and he is holding the Ten Commandments! Then as you enter the actual Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door. Sitting inside the courtroom, you can see the wall above where the Supreme Court judges sit a display of the Ten Commandments. And as you walk around Washington D.C. you will notice there are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments.
Historic fact is, James Madison, the fourth president, known as "The Father of Our Constitution" made the following statement. "We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God." EXECUTIVE ORDER 13397 - CHURCH AS GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY
Nancy Levant; July 25, 2006; NewsWithViews.com - The separation of church and state - gone with the stroke of a pen. As of March 7, 2006, our nation's leader signed another Executive Order, which tied the Department of Homeland Security to our leader's "faith-based" churches. Okay, all you non-profit churches out there -- you now serve the federal government's primary spying agency. That is now your primary function. You are now and officially an organized den of thieves.
I would feel sorry for the pastors, ministers, priests, and rabbis except for the fact that I just can't and won't. How stupid and positively corrupt can you possibly be to take money in exchange for manipulating your flocks of idiot sheep to the national slaughter? And will you also spy on your flocks and provide reports to your new master?
In exchange for money, have you agreed to pacify and organize your flocks in the event of a national emergency? You certainly have, for you have been ordered to do so. And have you been ordered to offer your buildings, your resources, and your labor forces called congregations to serve your newly declared administrator?
I try to come up with words to describe how I feel about this Executive Order and the churches that have "partnered" themselves to this system. The words don't come minus the fact that the church has completely and irreversibly fallen to the lowest and darkest common denominator, which is the total betrayal of the souls of the faithful. I would pray for your forgiveness, but I don't want to.
Nor do I want to write about this sickening topic. But, I appeal to Christian people to 1) ask your church leaders if they are "faith- based" funded, and 2) to leave those churches and start home-based churches with your friends and family members. Do not support Executive Ordered, Department of Homeland Security churches with your presence or your money. You are being manipulated and reported upon -- guaranteed.
You are being told what to do when more "crisis" hits the nation, and will hit the nation, as all is now planned down to our "weather emergencies," which are providing the training and relocation exercises for the real crisis to come -- the one that permanently collapses Constitutional America.
The church needs to regroup and gather in homes, where faith is restored, private, and truth is real. Forget the church leadership. They are padding their pockets and socially re-engineering your mind with think tank religion and crisis management, and they're getting paid to do so -- much like the public schools and mass media.
Raise your churches in your homes. All you need is a Bible -- one will do. Save yourselves and your souls and leave your new and improved church buildings, fancy organs, fundraisers, and colorful windows behind.
As in all Communist countries, the church will survive underground, so to speak, and with genuine prayer. And serve your Constitutional America. Don't give up on freedom -- even as it dissolves before your eyes. Be courageous in truth and gather together in truth.

Thus we find a strong emphasis on showing compassion through tangible deeds of mercy and justice. While sharply critical of conservative evangelicals’ involvement in American politics, Emergents advocate public activism in social causes such as environmentalism, international human rights, and reduction of Third World debt. Despite the clear red state vs. blue state lines here, biblical justification for many of these social concerns is not only easy to find, but shameful to deny. Tragically, however, the Emergent trajectory tends to overshoot the mark and careen toward moralism. While we would expect to find some abandonment of unpopular biblical standards—and we do find some—more striking is the movement’s heavy emphasis on certain types of behavior. The first of Gibbs and Bolger’s nine Emergent practices is “identifying with Jesus,” by which they mean personal and corporate imitation of the character of Christ. This involves deliberately shifting focus away from the Pauline letters and toward the Gospels, where we all find rich instruction on how citizens of the kingdom should live. The result, however, is that the theological significance of Christ’s atonement—the completeness of our justification, the assurance of our adoption, and the transforming power of His grace—is distanced from our calling to grow in holiness. Not unlike old liberalism, Emergent trumpets a number of worthy virtues, but neglects to explain and proclaim the very truths that make those virtues possible. .."

JUDGE SHOT DEAD AFTER BLOCKING PROMOTION OF TEACHER WHO WORE MUSLIM HEADSCARF
The Times, UK - May 18, 2006 - Suna Erdem in Instanbul -  A senior judge died yesterday after a lawyer opened fire in Turkey’s highest administrative court. He was apparently protesting against a ruling on the Muslim headscarf, which is barred from many places in the secular country. The attacker chanted, “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) and Islamist slogans as he sprayed bullets across the courtroom, wounding five of the six people present before he was arrested by police guards. It is thought that the attack in the centre of the capital, Ankara, was in protest at a decision not to promote a primary school headmistress who wore a Muslim headscarf on her way to work. “He came in shouting, ‘I am the soldier of Allah’,” said Tansel Colasan, the court’s deputy chairwoman. “He said he decided to act because of the headscarf ruling.” An investigation is under way into how Alparslan Arslan, 29, an Islamist lawyer, was able to smuggle the Glock automatic weapon past the X-ray machine at the entrance to the court building. Those wounded in the Council of State’s second chamber included Mustafa Birden, its chairman. Another victim, Mustafa Ozbilgin, died in hospital from head wounds.

A CULT OF CHRISTIANITY
The Mormon Church - officially, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint - considers itself not just a Christian denomination, but rather the only true expression of Christianity. However, the history, theology and practices of Mormonism show this religious movement to be outside of orthodox Christianity.
Mormons believe that their church is "the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth" (D&C 1:30), the only organization authorized by the Almighty to preach his gospel and administer the ordinances of salvation, the only Church which has power to save" (Mormon Doctrine; 1977 ed, p. 136).
Mormons either deny of pervert every essential doctrine of historic Christianity, including the uniqueness of God, the virgin birth, the Trinity, the authority of Scripture (by relegating it to a position below their other sacred writings), and salvation by grace through faith.

Individuals who, while claiming to be Christians, reject one of more central (key) doctrines of the Christian faith are considered heretics. Groups which reject such doctrines while claiming to represent Christianity, are considered cults of Christianity.

Thus, while Mormons profess to be Christians, they are outside orthodox Christianity and the Mormon Church is considered to be, theologically, a cult of Christianity.
Various legitimate Christian denomonations have made statements to this effect. See, for example, these news reports:
Delegates to the United Methodists' national convention meeting in Cleveland on Wednesday said the LDS Church "does not fit within the bounds of the historic, apostolic tradition of Christian faith," and that Mormons who convert to Methodism need to be re-baptized.
The convention approved a study document written by two Salt Lake City ministers, the Rev. Brian Hare-Diggs of First United Methodist Church and the Rev. Jennifer Hare-Diggs of Centenary United Methodist Church.
The nine-page paper, passed by the Methodist General Conference without floor discussion, spells out theological differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the United Methodist Church.
It says Mormonism has "some radically differing doctrine on such matters of belief as the nature and being of God; the nature, origin, and purpose of Jesus Christ; and the nature and way of salvation."
The Methodists said Mormonism incorporates a "gendered, married and procreating god" with "a body of flesh and bones," and has a theology that "more closely resembles a tri-theistic or possibly a polytheistic faith" than monotheism -- worship of the one God.
The Methodists also objected that "the Jesus of Mormonism is not co-eternal with the Father and of one substance with the Father" and that Mormons add other scriptures to the Bible.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) and Southern Baptist Convention have issued similar assessments of Mormon doctrine.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH DECLARED THURSDAY THAT MORMON CONVERTS MUST BE REBAPTIZED, A SETBACK TO THE MORMONS
The Roman Catholic Church declared Thursday that Mormon converts must be rebaptized, a setback to the Mormon Church's effort to characterize itself as a Christian denomination. The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith declared that baptisms in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are "not the baptism that Christ instituted."
The ruling was a departure from the Catholic Church's usual practice of recognizing the baptisms of converts from most other churches. The Vatican held that the Mormon view of the nature of God was too different from Catholicism's.
It was the second time in as many years that a major Christian church had ruled that Mormon converts must be rebaptized. Last year, the United Methodist Church, the nation's second-largest Protestant denomination, took a similar stand. [...]
Dan Wotherspoon, editor of Sunstone Magazine, an independent journal of Mormon life and issues published in Salt Lake City, said, "Clearly, the LDS church still has their work cut out for them in this effort to be known as a Christian church."
In Salt Lake City, Latter-day Saints spokesmen sought to minimize the importance of the Catholic decision, or its possible effect on efforts by the church to present itself as a Christian church. [...]

This is the first time viruses have been approved for use as food additives. The FDA wants you to believe it will be safe to consume these viruses every day for the rest of your life with no adverse health effects. This is a monumental announcement by the FDA, indicating they are throwing all caution to the wind regarding the safety of our food supply.
Are you willing to stand in line for a virus-laden sandwich? How do you like the idea of buying virus-infested food for your family? The first virally contaminated foods entering our food supply with the blessings of the FDA will be luncheon meat and poultry. Live viruses will be sprayed on foods such as cold cuts, sausages, hot dogs, sliced turkey, and chicken.
At issue is the very real problem of a poor quality FDA-approved food supply that is already full of diseased and sickly animals, many of them imported from other countries. The use of antibiotics during growth and radiation during food processing is required by the fast-food animal farms owned by multi-national companies to cover up the horrendous health of the animals they wish to feed to Americans. Animals in poor health are a friendly place for bacteria to grow and prosper, especially after such meat goes to market. Rather than address the source of the problem, the FDA wants to add another adulteration into our food supply.
The stated goal of the new FDA-approved viruses is to kill a rare bacterium known as Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium is killed by cooking; however, it poses a problem in meats that are cooked during processing and not cooked again prior to consumption, so it can readily infect foods such as deli meats.
Yes, the FDA plans to use one infectious organism to fight another. The carnage of battle will end up in your digestive tract along with the victorious live viruses, which the FDA assures us will not attack human cells. However, they cannot possibly be certain the viruses will not attack the friendly bacteria that make up the lining of your digestive tract. The FDA approval was based on scant human testing, mostly from unrelated medical experiments. Such safety data is woefully inadequate to determine safe ingestion of a specific product by humans over the course of a lifetime.

FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
Posted by Mike Spinney: "... But, for me, the real villain in this story is Scott Silverman, chairman of the board of a company called Applied Digital and its subsidiary VeriChip. VeriChip made headlines a couple years ago when one of its products, an implantable RFID capsule, received FDA approval for use in human beings.
Since that nod, and in spite of public fears over RFID implants, Silverman has been on a crusade, advocating that anything that walks on two or four legs be chipped, implications be damned. Earlier this year he went as far as suggesting that “guest workers” be injected with RFID chips in order to be tracked by the US government. During a televised interview on Fox News, Silverman said that chip implantation could be either “an election on the part of the immigrant or an election on the part of the government.”
Just this month he offered that the men and women of our nation’s military service would make ideal guinea pigs for implantable RFID chips. Adding weight to Silverman’s words is the fact that former Health and Human Services secretary Tommy Thompson is a member of VeriChip’s board, allowed himself to be injected with an ID chip, and remains an influential voice in Washington DC.
And you wonder why there’s so much hand-wringing over RFID?
I’ll be the first to admit I don’t want to live in a world where surreptitious intrusion into my personal business is the norm. I value my privacy as much as the next guy, but I also embrace the idea that technologies, such as RFID, can make my life better, safer, and move convenient. Shorter, faster lines at the checkout? Count me in. Better service at the hospital? It’s got my vote. For now, though, I’ll be leaving my Reynolds Wrap headwear at home.

A government study puts the cost of the Senate's version of reform at $127 billion over 10 years.

WASHINGTON – The price tag for comprehensive immigration reform was not a key issue when the Senate passed its bill last May. But it is now. One reason: It took the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) - the gold standard for determining what a bill will cost - until last week to estimate that federal spending for this vast and complex bill would hit $127 billion over the next 10 years.
At the same time, federal revenues would drop by about $79 billion, according to the CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation. If lawmakers fix a tax glitch, that loss would be cut in half, they add.
In field hearings across the nation this month, House GOP leaders are zeroing in on the costs of the Senate bill. It's a bid to define the issue heading into fall elections and muster support for the House bill, which focuses on border security. They say that the more people know about the Senate version, including a path to citizenship for some 11 million people now in the country illegally, the less they will be inclined to support it.
"We are now just beginning to see a glimpse of the staggering burden on American taxpayers the Reid-Kennedy immigration legislation contains," said House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, who convened a field hearing at the State House in Concord, N.H., Thursday on the costs of the Senate bill.
But business groups and others backing the Senate bill say that the cost to the US economy of not resolving the status of illegal immigrants and expanding guest-worker programs is higher still. "In my opinion, the fairer question is: How will illegal immigrants impact the costs of healthcare, local education, and social services without passage of comprehensive immigration reform?" said John Young, co-chairman of the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform, at Thursday's hearing. "Had we solved this problem in a truly comprehensive way in 1986 ... we would not have the daily news reporting outright shortages of farm labor threatening the very existence of agricultural industries coast to coast," he adds. Experts are poring over the new CBO data - and coming up with radically different assessments of the social costs of reform, ranging from tens of billions of dollars higher to a net wash.
On the issue of border security - a feature in both bills - there is little disagreement. The CBO estimates that the cost of hardening US borders in the Senate bill is $78.3 billion over 10 years, or about 62 percent of the bill's total cost.

The fireworks involve new entitlement spending in the Senate version. The CBO sets the price tag for services for some 16 million new citizens and guest workers at $48.4 billion through fiscal year 2016. That includes $24.5 billion for earned income and child tax credits, $11.7 billion for Medicaid, $5.2 billion for Social Security, $3.7 billion for Medicare, and $2.4 billion for food stamps. But it's easier to estimate the cost of a mile of fence than to assess the prospects for millions of workers, once they can work legally and claim benefits.
"The amnesty alone will be the largest expansion of the welfare system in the last 25 years," says Robert Rector, a senior analyst at the Heritage Foundation, and a witness at a House Judiciary Committee field hearing in San Diego Aug. 2. "Welfare costs will begin to hit their peak around 2021, because there are delays in citizenship. The very narrow time horizon [the CBO is] using is misleading," he adds. "If even a small fraction of those who come into the country stay and get on Medicaid, you're looking at costs of $20 billion or $30 billion per year."
Nonsense, say others who've studied the bill. Immigrant workers are also adding value to the economy, especially once they are working legally and paying taxes. Overall, it's a wash, they say.
"As you increase the number of immigrants to the US and as they get better jobs because a number of them will have attained legal status, they will pay higher taxes," says Leighton Ku, senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington. "On a longer-run basis, it looks as if the revenues will grow faster than the entitlement costs."

Christian Science Monitor 08/10/06 - After the protests, Latinos start to come together politically. By Luis Andres Henao 'Today we march," the banners read, "tomorrow we vote." Seventeen-year-old Paulo V., an undocumented Brazilian student who marched at an immigrant rally in Boston three months ago, was among the Latinos who saw hope in those words. "This was the determining point," says Paulo. Before the marches, "I didn't know anything about the topic. But after, I understood how much I could be a part of it." Recently, he took a break from painting houses with his dad to teach Edirson Paiva, the editor of a local Portuguese-language newspaper who just got his US citizenship, how to register to vote. "Even if I can't vote," Paulo says in his native Portuguese, "I can get 10 others to vote."
Five months after pro-immigrant protests swept through more than 100 US cities, an unprecedented Hispanic political force seems to be taking hold, one that may finally unite what could be the fastest-growing voting bloc in the United States. In the latest poll after the marches, 63 percent of Latinos surveyed said the rallies signaled the beginning of a new social movement, according to the 2006 National Survey of Hispanics by the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington, D.C."It's important because Latinos have not been a major political force in the US," says Gabriel Escobar, the center's research director and coauthor of the study. It's even more significant "because they represent the fastest-growing minority in the nation. Every year the population will grow and more Latinos will vote."
Currently, 4 out of every 10 adult Latinos are noncitizens and therefore cannot vote. Historically, their voter-participation numbers have lagged. In the last presidential election, only 18 percent of all Hispanics voted, compared with about half of the non-Hispanic white population and more than one-third (39 percent) of the black population, according to Pew data.
The marches may have been a catalyst for change. In the last Pew poll, three-quarters of Latinos said the debate would prompt many more of them to vote in November. In order to wield more political power, Latinos need to tackle several issues. One is unity. Mexicans, Brazilians, Salvadorans, and others feel connected to their native lands but have a harder time identifying themselves as "Hispanics." The policy debates that launched the protests may have changed that. The Pew survey showed that most Latinos (58 percent) now believe they are working to achieve common goals...
"There's an incredible apathy problem," says Jim Gimpel, a professor of government at the University of Maryland in College Park. "Many Latinos seem difficult to mobilize. They tell you: 'What if I do it wrong?' They don't have a sense of advocacy or self-esteem and it's hard to overcome." The language barrier has also been a problem, says Tom Patterson of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Mass. "If you don't speak the language well, how do you navigate this bureaucracy? How do you reach the polls?"....
But the marches, spurred by a House bill that would make it a crime for 11 million illegal immigrants to live and work in the US, also seem to be causing a Hispanic reaction...
"Everybody is part of this campaign, so you don't have to be a citizen," Paulo says after he finishes explaining how to register to Mr. Paiva. "I know what it's like - I've lived through this. SENATE RATIFIES CYBERCRIME TREATY
By Associated Press - August 4, 2006 - WASHINGTON -- The Senate has ratified a treaty under which the United States will join more than 40 other countries, mainly from Europe, in fighting crimes committed via the Internet.
The Council of Europe's Convention on Cybercrime, ratified late Thursday, is the first international treaty seeking to address Internet crimes by harmonizing national laws, improving investigative techniques and increasing cooperation among nations.
The convention had been signed by 38 European nations plus the United States, Canada, Japan and South Africa, as of the end of 2005. It was opened for signature in 2001.
"While balancing civil liberty and privacy concerns, this treaty encourages the sharing of critical electronic evidence among foreign countries so that law enforcement can more effectively investigate and combat these crimes," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
The convention targets hackers, those spreading destructive computer viruses, those using the Internet for the sexual exploitation of children or the distribution of racist material and terrorists attempting to attack infrastructure facilities or financial institutions.
"This treaty provides important tools in the battles against terrorism, attacks on computer networks, and the sexual exploitation of children over the Internet, by strengthening U.S. cooperation with foreign countries in obtaining electronic evidence," Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said. "The Convention is in full accord with all U.S. constitutional protections, such as free speech and other civil liberties, and will require no change to U.S. laws."

SENATE VOTES TO FUND THE FENCE
By Stephen Dinan and Brian DeBose - THE WASHINGTON TIMES - August 3, 2006 - The Senate did an abrupt about-face yesterday, voting overwhelmingly to begin paying for 370 miles of fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers on the U.S.-Mexico border, just three weeks after voting against the same spending. The amendment's sponsor said senators were so embarrassed by that July 13 vote that most felt they had to reverse course and vote for it this time -- especially after so many were on record in May voting to build the fence in the first place. The amendment, which provides nearly $2 billion for the project, passed 94-3, with 66 senators switching from "no" to "yes" votes since last month. "I think people wanted to get right," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican. "People heard from their constituents after they voted to authorize the fence in May and then voted against funding it a couple of weeks ago." The fence has become one of the flash points as Congress and President Bush try to craft a new immigration enforcement policy this year piece by piece. Mr. Bush travels to Texas today to review operations at the border, including the success of his plan to deploy the National Guard to assist the U.S. Border Patrol in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
This week, the president reached his goal of assigning 6,000 Guard troops to the border states by Aug. 1. Still, of the 6,340 troops assigned as of yesterday, only 2,675 troops, or 42 percent, were "forward deployed." The rest are at joint task force headquarters, in training or in transit. But the Guard's presence has led to a 25 percent drop in apprehensions at the border compared with the same time last year, suggesting the troops are having success in preventing illegal aliens from trying to cross. That good news, though, was tempered by a government report that found Department of Homeland Security employees were fooled by counterfeit driver's licenses in nine different tests by undercover investigators at U.S. border crossings. The Government Accountability Office said that hole in security "potentially allows terrorists or others involved in criminal activity to pass freely into the United States from Canada or Mexico." These total to 225,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!! What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment. Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers: First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients. Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort. Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report. If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease). Full story:

Arnold Schwarzenegger has tossed out all sexual moral conduct codes at colleges, private and Christian schools, daycare centers and other facilities throughout his state, if the institutions have any students who get state assistance. The governor yesterday signed a bill that would require all businesses and groups receiving state funding -- even if it's a state grant for a student -- to condone homosexuality, bisexuality and transsexuality. There is no exception for faith-based organizations or business owners with sincerely held religious convictions, critics note... "This isn't even a veiled attempt at subtly advancing the radical homosexual agenda," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute. "SB1441 is an outright, blatant assault on religious freedom in California." Her group's analysis of the legislation concluded it will prevent parochial schools such as private, Christian and other religious institutions from getting financial assistance for students if they maintain a code of conduct that does not endorse such behavior.
Whether that behavior is approved by their religious beliefs is, at this point, irrelevant, the analysis showed.
"As a citizen of California and a religious person, I am terribly disappointed in Gov. Schwarzenegger," said Meredith Turney, the legislative liaison for CRI. "It is bad public policy to add to the list of protected classes a sexual behavior.

RUSSIA DEVELOPS NEW SPACE STATION WITHOUT NASA'S HELP
August 30, 2006 ? Directors of the Russian space enterprise Roskosmos were quite late with their answer to US President George W. Bush who ordered NASA specialists last year to shift their attention from near-Earth orbit works to ambitious plans connected with the exploration of the Moon and Mars. Deputy head of Roskosmos, Vitaly Davidov, stated at the 5th International Space Congress in Moscow that Russia would be able to implement its programs without the cooperation with other leading space powers. According to the official, Russia plans to launch a new manned station into orbit after 2015.
Unlike the International Space Station, the new station, Davidov said, will be oriented at space exploration in Russia's interests. The zone to observe Russia from space will be expanded considerably too (the ISS currently observes only ten percent of Russia's territory). . . The statement about the long-term sovereign plans of the Russian space industry was made at the moment when NASA had to indefinitely delay the launch of Shuttle Atlantis. Commission spokeswoman Linda Spalinski said one staff member already is certified as a trainer for the program and a second is going through the seminars. Spalinski said the commission hopes to have all of its toll collectors and maintenance personnel trained in the Highway Watch program.

EXECUTIVES CASH IN ON WAR AND OIL BONANZA
August 31, 2006 by the Inter Press Service - by Emad Mekay - WASHINGTON - Top oil and defence industry executives in the United States are raking in record personal profits on the backs of the U.S. wars following the terror attacks of Sep. 11, 2001 and sky-high oil prices, two think-tanks said Wednesday. "CEOs (chief executive officers) in the defense and oil industries have been able to translate war and rising oil prices into personal jackpots," says the new report "Executive Excess 2006," a 60-page study by the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington and the Boston-based United for a Fair Economy.
The report's authors say U.S. taxpayers are funding much of this bonanza and faulted U.S. political and congressional leaders for not exercising better and more thorough oversight. "Americans across the political spectrum should be outraged by the sight of executives cashing in on war windfalls," says report co-author Sarah Anderson. "Unfortunately, partisan politics has stopped Congress from effectively overseeing this war contracting free-for-all."
The study surveys all publicly held U.S. corporations among the top 100 defence contractors that had at least 10 percent of revenues in defence. It found that the top 34 CEOs combined have earned almost a billion dollars since the 9/11 attacks on the United States. This would have been enough money to employ and support more than a million Iraqis for a year to rebuild their country.
The defence executives' average compensation jumped from 3.6 million during the pre-9/11 period of 1998-2001 to 7.2 million dollars during the post-9/11 period of 2002-2005. Among other startling facts revealed in the report is that in 2005 alone, defence industry CEOs garnered 44 times more pay than military generals with 20 years experience, and 308 times more than Army privates. The report names United Technologies CEO George David as the winner of the top spot in executive profits after the Iraq war with more than 200 million dollars in pay since 9/11, despite investigations into the quality of the company's Black Hawk helicopters. Health Net's CEO Jay Gellert secured the biggest personal pay raise after 9/11, a gigantic 1,134 percent leap over the preceding four years.
"The company owes its earnings growth to American taxpayers, who may not realize they pick up a hefty share of cost overruns in the privatized military health care system," said the report. Halliburton CEO David Lesar made a modest 26.6 million dollars last year, even though his company has been criticised for its links to U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. EVOLUTION MAJOR VANISHES FROM APPROVED FEDERAL LIST
August 25, 2006 by the New York Times by Cornelia Dean - Evolutionary biology has vanished from the list of acceptable fields of study for recipients of a federal education grant for low-income college students.
The omission is inadvertent, said Katherine McLane, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, which administers the grants. “There is no explanation for it being left off the list,” Ms. McLane said. “It has always been an eligible major.” Another spokeswoman, Samara Yudof, said evolutionary biology would be restored to the list, but as of last night it was still missing. If a major is not on the list, students in that major cannot get grants unless they declare another major, said Barmak Nassirian, associate executive director of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. Mr. Nassirian said students seeking the grants went first to their college registrar, who determined whether they were full-time students majoring in an eligible field.
“If a field is missing, that student would not even get into the process,” he said.
That the omission occurred at all is worrying scientists concerned about threats to the teaching of evolution.
One of them, Lawrence M. Krauss, a physicist at Case Western Reserve University, said he learned about it from someone at the Department of Education, who got in touch with him after his essay on the necessity of teaching evolution appeared in The New York Times on Aug. 15. Dr. Krauss would not name his source, who he said was concerned about being publicly identified as having drawn attention to the matter. An article about the issue was posted Tuesday on the Web site of The Chronicle of Higher Education. Dr. Krauss said the omission would be “of great concern” if evolutionary biology had been singled out for removal, or if the change had been made without consulting with experts on biology. KATRINA DISASTER PROFITEERS POCKET MILLIONS IN DEALS

That's the verdict of a report into New Orleans' reconstruction, and the huge contracts handed to non-local firms.- by Andrew Buncombe in Washington. A year after Hurricane Katrina, the reconstruction of the devastated Gulf coast is being severely hampered by waste and inefficiency overseen by "disaster profiteers" who are making million of dollars, according to a watchdog group. The group claims the inefficiency - along with the companies' political connections - follows a pattern similar to what happened in Afghanistan and Iraq.
With much of New Orleans still in ruins and its population half of what it was before the hurricane, a new report claims millions of dollars has been squandered by wasteful processes that have seen 90 per cent of the first wave of reconstruction contracts awarded to firms outside Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Local firms have been frozen out while immigrant workers have been exploited and often unpaid. "One year after the disaster, the slow-motion rebuilding of the region looks identical to what has happened in Afghanistan and Iraq," said Pratap Chatterjee, the director of Corpwatch. "The process of getting Katrina-stricken areas back on their feet is needlessly behind schedule, in part, due to the shunning of local business people in favour of politically connected corporations from elsewhere in the US that have used their clout to win lucrative no-bid contracts with little or no accountability."
When President George Bush addressed America from floodlit Jackson Square in New Orleans on 15 September last year, he said: "Our goal is to get the work done quickly. And taxpayers expect this work to be done honestly and wisely.... And in the work of rebuilding, as many jobs as possible should go to the men and women who live in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama."
Yet the report details how the overwhelming majority of initial contracts for construction went to companies - "usually large, politically connected corporations - based outside these three states". Among the biggest winners of contracts were Florida-based Ashbritt, which received a $500m contract; Bechtel of San Francisco, which has received $575m worth; and Texas-based Fluor Corp - $1.4bn. One Louisiana company that received a large contract was the Shaw Group, which was awarded $950m worth. There is no suggestion that any of these companies has acted illegally or stepped outside acceptable commercial practice. The report's author, Rita King, said: "The devastation of the Gulf coast is tragic enough but the scope of the corporate greed that followed, facilitated by government incompetence and complicity is downright criminal. Sadly, disaster profiteering has become commonplace in America. Corporations are growing rich off no-bid contracts while the sub-contractors [get] peanuts."
Another aspect highlighted is the failure to pay immigrant workers, who do much of the reconstruction work. OJIO VOTING PROBLEMS DEEMED SEVERE
August 16, 2006 by Agence France Presse by Connie Mabin - Problems with elections in Ohio's most populous county are so severe that it's unlikely they can be completely fixed by November, or even by the 2008 presidential election, a report commissioned by Cuyahoga County and released Tuesday says. A nonprofit group hired to review the county's first election with new electronic voting machines found several problems with the May 2 primary, the results of which were delayed six days because roughly 18,000 absentee ballots had to be hand counted.
The absentee ballots had been improperly formatted for new optical scan voting machines. Poll workers also had problems operating the machines, some poll workers didn't show up, vote memory cards disappeared and one precinct opened hours late. Researchers also found that the four sources used to keep track of vote totals on machines did not always add up.
"The election system in its entirety exhibits shortcomings with extremely serious consequences, especially in the event of a close election," wrote Steven Hertzberg, director of the study by the San Francisco-based Election Science Institute. The report, part of a $341,000 review ordered by county commissioners, suggests that the county revamp poll worker training, develop a plan to ensure all electronic votes are counted in the case of a manual count and consider adding machines to avoid long lines that might scare voters away. An official with the maker of the voting machines, North Canton-based Diebold Inc., said the report was flawed because the researchers did not properly review electronic votes in some cases. Mark Radke, director of marketing for Diebold subsidiary Diebold Election Systems, also blamed inadequately trained poll workers, saying the totals didn't always add up because some changed memory cards without also changing the paper receipt rolls. County elections chief Michael Vu said he could not comment on the report until Diebold and ESI worked out any issues. Then he wants ESI to present its findings to the elections board "so that we can make an informed decision to the report as a whole." AP M.R.
